Coolest Twins Birthday Cake

This twins birthday cake was created for a pair of girls celebrating their 2nd birthday. Two sweet little monkeys.

The colors for the party were pinks and brown. The cake is a 10″ round yellow cake covered in a rose colored butter cream and border is white butter cream. The monkeys, letters and dots were created from homemade marshmallow fondant (and since I didn’t have an & symbol I first cut out a 4 and tried putting it upside down and then settled on using a backwards 3). The bows are gum paste/fondant combo made with the hydrangea ejector cutter and impression mat in Wilton Advanced Flower kit with a sugar pearl center then covered in luster dust for the sparkle.

TIP: To create the monkeys I found an image online and printed it out in the size that would be good for cake. I then traced the image in 2 parts on parchment paper and cut them out to create my stencils. Once I rolled out my marshmallow fondant I laid down the parchment paper stencils and used an exacto knife to cut out the shapes. The ears were made from a small circle simply cut in half and shaped. The eyes, nose, mouth and inner ear were made from the brown fondant and just hand rolled in appropriate sizes needed.

I have only been doing custom cakes for about 4 months and without having a lot of the “professional tools” available I was very pleased with the completed cake. I hope this inspires others to get their creative juices flowing.
