Homemade 3year olds Pirate Treasure Chest Birthday Cake

My 3year old wanted a Pirate themed birthday party and after a little look online I found this website that gave me some ideas that would be simple! We were only having a small party so this was a small cake but we were eating leftovers for 4days after!

I made a gluten free cake mix up and cooked it in a rectangle slice tin. I cut it into thirds and stacked 2 together to create the chest, stuck together with raspberry jam, and covered with chocolate butter icing – no need to make it perfect, a rough finish looked amazing!

On the top I used gold coins and small colourful jubes (jewels) for the treasure, pressing them into the wet icing on angles.

Then cut a small wedge off the inside edge of the third piece to create the lid that would sit on top of the chest, held in place with long toothpicks. I iced the lid and used sour strawberry straps as the hinges and lock (a small blob of black butter icing for the lock hole) and lined the chests straps with mini skittles.

Scattering a few gold coins around the base completed the cake! Huge hit with the kids and adults alike!
