Homemade Sesame Street Band Birthday Cake

This cake was for my son?s Sesame Street themed 2nd birthday party. Cake toppers were purchased from Michael?s craft store and the cake and cupcake ideas were found on Wilton.com. Cake and cupcakes were made from several confetti box mixes, though I altered the ingredients to make it more dense and firm, not airy and crumbly like cake mixes usually are. The cake was 3 layers high of 10? rounds. Frosting was homemade buttercream, except for the red frosting- I purchased that so I could have a nice, bright red that tasted good instead of homemade that would be a dull red and possibly bitter (learned from my son?s 1st bday). Other decorations include a #2 candle and M&Ms. If you can?t tell, it?s supposed to look like a drum. But even if you couldn?t tell, it just looks like a fun decorated cake. The cupcakes were decorated each with a crayon shaped candle and piped squiggles to look like crayon marks from Elmo?s World. I thought it was just adorable! I was 38 weeks pregnant during this party and was really looking for a simple and easy cake to make. And it really was as long as you have all the appropriate gel colorings and decorator?s tips- especially since the figures were store bought and all piping consisted of borders, stars, and freehand squiggles. One of the kids at the party said, “You made that??!! My mom could never do that!” And everyone heard, including her mom, and laughed. What a fun day!
