Lightening McQueen Cars Cake

This cake was made with the classic Wilton Cars cake pan. I used the step-by-step instructions which come with the leaflet in the pan and I would have been lost without it. It’s very specific in that it numbers for you every step to make this cake. There’s a lot of detail to it in regards to making things symmetrical etc., but I think I succeeded in that. The eyes were even, the headlights were even and the windows. As I started decorating, I didn’t know how it would ever turn out nice. It was a slow start, but as I kept working on it it started to look good. I recommend using 2 jars of the Wilton “no taste” red icing to get it such a deep color. I always start with white icing, so it takes me a lot of color to get it a dark shade.

I’m not a fan of Wilton’s black gel coloring. If you start out with white icing, you have to use a ton of it and it tastes awful. I recommend starting out with the red and then adding some black into it to darken it. I made the classic Wilton butter cream icing and that’s always a hit. I presented the cake on the 16″ round cardboard that is covered in Wilton cake board paper.
