Lightning McQueen Cake

I made this cake for my son’s 3rd birthday, He wanted a Cars cake. I re used a cake stand I had made from the previous year, but just modifyed it slightly. The stand was made from silver cake boards and wedding pillars stuck together with silicone.

The top tier was iced with Betty Crocker icing (as it was white) and then I layed a checked ribbon around the middle and secured with a pearl pin. I piped red icing around the outer edge and alternated yellow and orange crispy M&Ms around. The podium that McQueen sits on is one of the spooles from the ribbon covered with a little aluminium foil and green icing ontop to stop the McQueen toy from rolling away. And the flags were toothpicks with the same ribbion as around the middle of the cake.

The bottom tier was a buttercake I made into a doughnut shape and iced white also. Ribbon was then used around the middle and a road made from black fondant icing layed as the track. Green icing was then piped around the track and using a fork to make it look like grass.

Red and yellow stars were piped around the base to finish it off, along with some plastic trees, a checkered finish line and some other character cars around the track.

My son loved it, but it was definately the most time consuming cake I have made!
