Snow Fairy Winter Birthday Cake

My daughter wanted a snow fairy cake topper for her 8th birthday party (a Winter Wonderland and Snow Fairies theme). Since her birthday is in January, we were able to find a small ceramic white angel in a thrift shop after Christmas for fifty cents! It became a fun mother/daughter project to paint the angel and try to make it look more like a fairy. We used light blue paint to paint her dress and wings. It’s hard to tell from the picture, but we painted some snowflakes on, too. We added to her wings by cutting out cardboard ones from a pretty patterned Kleenex box, gluing shiny wrapping papper on the back, adding some glitter glue to the wing tips, and attaching with clear hair rubberbands. We put a light blue feather around her head with snowflakes attached. She is thrilled because she gets to keep the figurine.

The cake is a homemade lemon cake (two 9 inch rounds) with homemade lemon icing (Better Homes and Gardens Creamy White Frosting recipe). I just tinted some of the icing with blue food coloring and used different tips to experiment with making snowflakes (you can’t mess up snowflakes and if you feel like you do, just take it off and make another one!). I already had a spatula from Target with a snowflake stencil pattern cut out of it that I use to sprinkle powdered sugar for “snowflake french toast or pancakes.” I pressed the spatula lightly on the top of the iced cake and sprinkled blue sugar crystals to make the snowflakes on top. Then, I just added a few silver dragees to add some shine. I found the snowflake candle at the Dollar Store after Christmas, too. All of the little girls were very impressed with the “Snow Fairy” cake and it didn’t take too long! We spent the most time on the figurine and not the cake, but you could just use a fairy doll you already have.
