Homemade Ice Age Cake

Homemade Ice Age Cake

My son is a huge fan of the Ice Age movies. For his 5th birthday he asked for an Ice Age party. I decided to go with the theme from Ice Age 3 to include all the characters and use the jungle theme.

This is a chocolate Ice Age cake (the recipe from the back of a Hershey's cocoa container). It is filled with a chocolate fudge center. I used a 9 x 13 pan and an 8 x 8 pan. I made a double batch of cake batter for this.

After the cakes were cooled I sliced each one to create two layers, then cut the 8 x 8 cake to have two pieces roughly 2/3 and 1/3. I layered the cakes with the fudge filling. I placed skewers down through the tallest stacked part of the cake for stability.

Next was a simple buttercream frosting tinted green with Wilton colors. I first put a crumb coat then came back with a thicker coat. I used the "grass" tip to make the raised grassed areas. I used un-tinted (white) buttercream frosting for the foundation of the waterfall. Before that was set, I added blue piping gel and smeared it into the white icing for the water effect.

I used spearmint leaves on small pretzel sticks for mini trees. I coated chow mien noodles in Wilton green melts for other vegetation. The palm trees are large pretzel rods for trucks. I used the Wilton green melts in a baggie, cut the tip off and piped the melted chocolate over the backs of spoons. When hardened I assembled the trees with more melted chocolate.

I used Runts banana candies and chocolate Reese's Puffs cereal for coconuts. Lastly, I borrowed all of my son's Ice Age figures and placed them around the homemade Ice Age cake.

I love your use of various food items, candies, and candy melts to make the scenery. I will be using this as inspiration for my son's SAFARI cake for his first birthday. Thank you for sharing!
