I made this homemade Panda bear cake for my sister in law’s graduation from college. She loves Panda Bears, so I thought I’d make her a Panda cake. My mom used to make us lots of different “cut up” cakes for our birthdays as kids, so I figured it couldn’t be too hard. I was really happy with the results.

I used two oven safe baking dishes to make the head and the body. I used a slightly larger one for the body. I had never baked a cake in a baking dish, and I was pleased with how they turned out. Although, I had to bake the body for almost an hour before a toothpick in the middle came out clean.

I baked a 9” square cake and cut the legs and arms from that. I baked cupcakes for the nose and the ears. I used chocolate cake for the body and the square cake and cherry chip for the head and cupcakes. All were box mixes.

I bought three big cans of vanilla frosting and mixed one with one bottle of Wilton’s black gel coloring. I cut up one of the cupcakes and used small pieces “glued” with frosting to fill in the neck area. I frosted the head and body with the white frosting, making sure to fill the neck in completely. I cut the stump off of a cupcake and used the top to make the nose. I frosted around the nose, filling in any gaps.

I used a toothpick to draw on the eyes and nose and then piped it in with black. I used the grass tip, Wilton’s #233, to make the hair on the arms, legs, and ears. Then I piped “Congratulations Natalia!” on it in purple, her favorite color. Everyone loved the way it looked, but the black frosting will turn your teeth black too.
