Cool Homemade Luau Birthday Cake

I got asked to make this cake by a store manager at work, so of course I said yes! Her friend was looking at a picture from Pinkcakebox’s website and asked if I could make it or something close to it.

The middle tier is styrofoam because they didn’t need that much cake, but the top cake is yellow and the bottom is marble. I made this cake in one night (don’t try this at home it’s nerve wracking!) This cake took about 8 pounds of fondant including the decorations. I bought a real sea shell and pushed the purple fondant into it to make the shells. I cut out a piece of paper almost in the shape of a heart without the point and used it to cut out flower petals for the flowers.

The flowers are made from gumpaste (take 1# fondant and add 1/2-1 tsp tylose and 1/4 tsp shortening).

I used dry food coloring powder to color the flowers , along with cranberry colored luster dust to cover the pink parts of the cake and Smokey Amethyst for the purple parts.

To make the skirt I used a pizza cutter and rolled it over and over. As for the border, I rolled orange balls and used Wilton’s gumpaste tool set to press sea shells onto each one.
