Coolest Lightning McQueen Cake

One night my wife and I were watching Ace of Cakes on the Food Network. I made a comment along the lines of “I could do that”. Well, she more or less told me to prove it and since we had one of our son’s having a birthday coming up, I asked him what kind of cake he wanted. He said he wanted a Lightning McQueen cake and so I did my best to make him one.

This cake is covered with a rolled butter cream frosting. I stacked 2 9×13 cakes and carved the basic shape out. All of the cake embellishments were shaped from the rolled butter cream as well.

  1. I love your cake. I will be making one like this in April. What is rolled buttercream? Did you make it or buy it? Is it the same as marshmallow fondant?

  2. Rolled buttercream is similar to fondant in that it is rolled out and laid over a frosted cake. It is basically very thick buttercream frosting. The recipe is easily found online. At the time I did not know about marshmallow fondant. Fondant is much easier to work with and I use it almost exclusively now.
