Cool Homemade 3D Pink, White and Purple Carousel Cake

The inspiration from this carousel cake came from my first birthday. My mother had a carousel cake for my first birthday (1976) and I wanted to do the same for my daughter Abigail.

My friend (Crystal) and I (Angie) scoured the internet for ideas and even looked on eBay for a kit that looked like my cake (with no success). We liked the ideas from several of the cakes we found on this website and from other sites.

Several days before the party we did a test cake because neither of us had ever used fondant and that is what we wanted the cake to be covered in. I would advise anyone that doesn’t have much decorating experience to do this.

We couldn’t find a small flower cutout anywhere, so we ended up using a mold from my older daughter’s (Emily) playdough set. It worked wonderfully. We made the flowers a few days ahead of time from the fondant and just refrigerated them.

The bottom layer is two 10 inch rounds made from a white cake mix and the second layer is two 8 inch rounds made from a dark chocolate fudge cake mix. The dome on top is rice krispy candy that was molded from a soup bowl.

We used 3 batches of homemade buttercream icing from a Wilton recipe to decorate this cake, with two batches being medium consistency and one batch a stiff consistency (they all could have probably been medium though). We bought a large box of fondant and had more than enough to decorate with.

The horses were just wooden cut outs found in the craft section at Wal-Mart, that we painted to match the colors of the party supplies and the cake. We used ribbon to wrap the pillars and hot glued them in place. We made the actual cake the night before the party and it took several hours to decorate.

This was a very fun experience for us and we enjoyed it immensely. My daughter absolutely loved it and everyone at the party couldn’t believe that we actually made it ourselves. I would like to give many thanks and much gratitude to my friend Crystal who worked tirelessly to make this cake perfect for my daughter.

Now, to get started on that Mario cake for my son’s party!

  1. I think it looks the best out of the other carousel cakes. It wasn’t made sloppy everything is actually made perfect. I was reading how you made it really creative. I was amazed when I read that you made the top out of rice crispies lol… Good job!

  2. I think is the one of the best cakes in the carousel section. Everything is made and fit into place perfectly. You did a great job on it.
