Coolest Fish Bowl Cake

We had an “under the sea” theme for my son’s 1st birthday, complete with seafood menu and huge aquatic Mylar balloons as goodie bag give-aways for kids.

I took all the great ideas posted here in the fish bowl cake section. I made four 9-inch round cakes and used chocolate mousse to hold them together. Turn them on their side and cut the top/bottom for the fish bowl look and positioned it. Then I crumb coated the cake the night before for easy icing the next morning.

I used nerds for the gravel, fruit-by-the-foot for the grass and raspberries for sea life rocks. Silver balls for the bubbles and Wilton black food coloring for fish faces (dipped with the tip of a toothpick to paint the eyes & smile on fish). I used the same technique as a previous poster suggested and just cut the corner off a plastic bag and piped the rim of the fish bowl like that with the icing.

Our seafood menu included several types of fish dishes, ocean blue slushy punch, shellfish etc. The non-fish items were all served on fish-shaped platters and our favourite item- “octopus” hot dogs which were a huge hit….even the vegetarian kids wanted to eat them!
