Coolest Ladybug Birthday Cake Idea

We call our daughter Bug so for her first birthday a Ladybug Birthday Cake Idea seemed to make sense. I had a 9” and 8” round cake pan so I bought a box cake mix and used both size pans. I also bought 2 cans of frosting and a set of 4 food color dyes. I let the cake cool then cut them both in half. I put the 2 pieces from the 9” cake in the center and the pieces from the 8” cake on the outside. I frosted between each layer.

I dyed one can red and used it on the outside, then let it cool overnight to let the frosting firm up. The next day I mixed red, blue and green together to make a grayish black for the spots. I used a little less green than blue and red. I put the grayish black in a frosting piping bag with a star tip (although the tip didn’t make a difference). I used the bag to put some of the grey on the sides where I wanted spots then used a spatula to smooth it out into a circle. I also used the bag to create the face and again used the spatula to smooth it out.

For the eyes, I took a marshmallow and cut it in half then put a spot of grey frosting in the center. I happened to have some red gel in a tube that I used for the mouth although the red frosting would have worked just as well. For antenna I used 2 blue candles, licorice would also have worked. My 1 year old daughter didn’t really care but I was thrilled with how it turned out.
