Cool Homemade Mario Toad Cake

I made this Mario cake for my nephew’s 5th birthday party. I made two round 9″ pans for the base layer then used the Wilton Ball pan (only half) for the mushroom top. I made a small 7″ round cake then shaved it down for the mushroom base.

I frosted the entire cake with butter-cream frosting and added marshmallow fondant to the mushroom pieces. I used a round cookie cutter to cut out the circles for the mushroom. To create the hills I just outlined with a toothpick then filled it in with green stars.

The drain, parana, and goomba, were all free-handed out of fondant. It’s like playing with play-dough… when you mess up you just roll and start over!
