Coolest Sponge Bob Cake

I had the idea to make my Sponge Bob cake actually stand up. I first had to build a wood stand that would hold a 9″x 13″ cake with a 3″ shelf at the bottom of the cake stand, this would of course prevent the cake from sliding off the stand. I also built the stand with about a 15 degree tilt back for the law of gravity.

After laying the 2 cakes with filling into position I began to carve the cake to give it a trapazoid shape and with wavey side and top. I then sculpted the eyes, checks, & upper lip to give it the 3D effect, this can also be done by adding cake to those areas and shaping them. I used a 1/4″ wood dowel for the nose with fondant at the very end to give it the perfect nose shape. The next step was to cover the entire sculpted cake with a yellow fondant.

Stretch the fondant over the cake and wrap around to the wood stand and use piping gel to adhere it to the wood stand. I trimmed the fondant leaving about a 1/2″ extra to pipe to the wood stand. The rest of the design is done with fondant that is colored to match “Bob”.

The last things to do would be the arms. I used 1/4″ wood dowels and Gum paste for this. Use a pencil sharpener to sharpen the end that will go into the cake. Color your gum paste and form a ball about 2″ round. Begin by forming the fingers, and then stick the dowel into the center and form the gum paste down the dowel until you get the right look. Difficulty level is about 9 1/2.
