Coolest Thomas The Tank Engine Cake

This Thomas The Tank Engine Cake was a lot easier to colour with regular food colouring, green much easier than blue!

Use one cake mix for 2 loaf pans and one mini loaf pan. Buy two “roll” cakes, jelly or creme filled. Made 7 minute frosting (egg whites and sugar) mixed in green food colour.

Trim the loaves so they form the long base, put the rolls on top (attaching with some buttercream as glue), then put small loaf in half and stack up to form back of train. Use “pocky” chocolate pretzel sticks to hold it in place.

Face is the hard part. I made fondant from a recipe in joy of cooking. It is sugar and water, a touch of vanilla, that’s it. Tinted some grey with “scribblers” black cake decorating pen. Used remaining white bits to form eyes and mouth. Outlined with the black pen.

I used chocolate cookies for wheels, Oreo “roll” wafers for lights and smoke stack. Red butter cream, made with a spoon of cocoa powder to help darken it and then red food colour. Mix cocoa powder with red and blue and green colour to get a greyish frosting for the “black areas”. Wasn’t black enough for me so I sprinkled on black sugar.

Iced most of it green, assembled the train then piped on the red trim. Attached the fondant face at last minute.
