Cool Homemade Toy Story Scene Birthday Cake

My son is obsessed with Toy Story so I wanted to make him a Toy Story birthday cake for his 3rd birthday. After looking at tons of pictures online, I took ideas from a bunch of them and came up with this.

I used a half sheet cake for this. The top is chocolate frosting, with a dark chocolate frosting piped across to make the floorboards. The sides are blue frosting, which after a coloring disaster for his 1st birthday cake I learned that you can purchase directly from some grocery stores that make cakes.

The ‘Happy Birthday 3’ is fondant. I drew that freehand on paper and then traced and cut the fondant. This took a really long time. The blocks, pillow, and the bed are rice krispie treats, molded to shape and then covered in fondant. The letters for my son’s name are piped frosting. I found a large sheet of the treats at iParty, which was much easier than making it myself or putting together smaller ones since I could cut them to size.

The headboard is made from Pirouette cookies. I originally added Whoppers to the corners with frosting, but this picture was taken after we transported the cake to the party and they fell off on the way. I did not make the characters. The aliens and Buzz are candles, and the others are from a set of toys that my son got to keep after the cake.

This is actually only my 2nd attempt at cake decorating, so I think it turned out pretty good. My son was thrilled with it!

  1. Love the detail, the floorboards and the cookies for the headboard in particular. I also loved that you took help where you could get it! This cake rocks.
