Homemade Twins 30th Birthay Cake

I made this cake for my twin daughters 30th birthday, they are both totally different so I thought it would be nice to mould them indiviually out of royal icing.

I started by making a 12″ sponge cake and filled it with strawberry jam and butter cream icing, I then covered the whole cake with a thin layer of butter icing and covered the cake with white roll out royal icing.

The figures were made out of royal icing which I coloured with Waltons icing colours, the belt, skirts and book etc were moulded or cut out freehand. The hair was made by putting the icing through a garlic press and placed in different lengths on their heads, the eyes were painted on with black colouring and the mouth made with a cocktail stick, lastly the flowers by using a blossom plunger.

Lastly I put a ribbon around the bottom of the cake and 30th sparkler candles to finish it off.

I was quite pleased with the end result as it was the first time I have attempted something like this.
