Thomas the Tank Engine Cake

This Thomas the Tank cake was for my son’s second birthday. I got the idea from a friend’s cake book (can’t recall the name of it).

I used a 13×9 glass pan and baked two boxes of prepared cake mix as the boxes called for. When the cake cooled, I placed the cake on cardboard wrapped in aluminum foil. I then cut out the shape of the train and then cut out a circle where the face would be.

I carefully lifted the circle piece of cake out and then filled in the hole with the scrap pieces of cake and placed the circle back on top of the scrap pieces so now it was raised up.

I melted white chocolate for the eyes. And I used tire tread licorice (I bought it on the internet) for the details on the cake, the train tracks and around the face (circle piece of cake) using the frosting as a glue. For the details on the face I used black decorating gel.
