Easy Butterfly Cake made by Dad and Child

My dad and I made this butterfly cake for my mum’s birthday as she likes butterflies. We made it using two square cake tins. We then cut around wing templates that we had got off the internet to make two wings. A leftover strip from the cake was iced pink and made the body.

We stuck a wing cake either side and iced it blue, with pink icing piped around the edge to neaten it. We used pink smarties for a spotty pattern, and two blue smarties for eyes. For antennae we twisted purple and green pipe cleaners together, as they didn’t have blue or pink, and stuck them into the head of the butterfly.

We iced an extra slice of cake and put a candle in it, as we didn’t want to ruin the butterfly. Overall, it was time consuming but easy to make, although if we did it again we would put the smarties on right before presenting the cake rather than the night before, as it absorbed some of the icing colour and went purple-ish.
