Coolest Brown and Blue Square Fondant Baby Shower Cake

I made this cake for my best friend’s baby shower. The baby’s comforter has square and rectangles on it. So I thought I should do a square cake.

I used a wilton pan the next size up from the 9×13 for the bottom cake. The top cake is made from a 9×13 pan and I cut it to make it smaller. I tinted fondant a brown and blue. I used a Wilton fondant cutter in squares.

I used buttercream frosting from the can to frost the cake before I put the fondant on. You can make your own fondant but make sure you tint it when you make it. I made that mistake so I ended up buying some fondant. When you put the fondant on top – use a fondant smoother for the sides and top. Cup your hand over the fondant for each corner. This helps the fondant not to crease. I just cut out squares from the fondant and used a paint brush to put water on the back of the cutout to act as glue.

Along the bottom of the cake you can cut fondant out like a ribbon and attach to the cake. Here’s another idea – years ago I did a cake like this but with dots. I used a wilton decorating tip that was the size of a nickel and quarter.

I bought a monkey beanie baby to put on top of the cake. This homemade brown and blue square fondant baby shower cake is a fun and easy cake to make.
