Homemade Fish Birthday Cake

Homemade Fish Birthday Cake

I made this fish birthday cake for my daughter's second birthday. I hadn't decorated a birthday cake in quite a few years so this was a challenge. It is made from one round cake tin.

The cake itself is a flourless orange cake which is then covered with a marshmallow fondant icing. It was the first time I made this kind of icing and it was scare but fun. It is great that it can be made ahead of time and stored in the fridge till needed.

I put orange food coloring in half of it for the body and left the rest white for the fins and tail. I firstly covered the cake with butter icing before putting on the fondant icing to help the fondant stick to the cake and try avoid lumps and bumps in the surface finish. I then finished off using chocolate buttons for scales.

The background is simply blue paper with jelly sweets covered with cling film.
