Fish Cake

I threw a fish-themed party for my son’s third birthday and I wanted to make his cake myself this time. I used a round pan for the body and a heart-shaped pan for the tail. The pointy tip of the heart-shaped cake was cut off with a curve to follow the round cake (the tip was going to be a fin, but fell victim to Daddy). I “glued” the two pieces together with buttercream frosting then frosted the whole cake with white buttercream.

Daddy took over the decorating then, spraying alternating green and purple stripes onto the fish with Wilton Color Mist. He then piped lines on the stripes, tail, outline and smile with purple buttercream. I cut a marshmallow in half and used blue food coloring to “paint” a pupil on the cut side for the fish’s eye.

At the party, the fish cake was surrounded by cupcakes iced with a 1M swirl and sprayed with blue Wilton Color Mist – a fish swimming in the ocean!
