DESIGN:

Tinkerbell’s dress was inspired by a Carrie Bradshaw (Sex and The City) rainbow skirt she wore in one episode.

CAKE:

I baked one 6″x2″ cake and one 3″x3″ cake to create the skirt. I used a red velvet recipe I found online. Unfortunately, I can’t remember which one. It was an unremarkable recipe anyways. I cut the 6″ and 3″ cakes in half and filled it with a Martha Stewart cream cheese frosting recipe I found online. I also used it to “glue” the two cakes together, with the larger 6″ cake on the bottom and the 3″ cake on top. I placed the cakes in the refrigerator for a couple of hours to firm up before carving it into a skirt shape.

DOLL:

I wrapped the doll’s legs with saran wrap. I cut a wedge shaped piece off of the back of the refrigerated skirt cake. I pushed the doll into the middle of the skirt cake. I cut a portion of the wedge shaped piece of cake so that when I pushed it behind the doll and back into the cake, it would fit appropriately. I then covered the whole cake in cream cheese frosting and placed it in the refrigerator to firm up again.

LEAVES/PETALS:

The leaves/petals are made of a Wilton half gum paste half fondant mix. I used a mold used for clay making to imprint the leaves/petals with veins. For each leaf/petal, I would take a pea sized piece of the gumpaste/fondant and roll it into a ball. I would then take the ball and roll it into a football shape before pressing it flat into the mold into a leaf/petal shape. I placed each leaf/petal onto a foam egg crate padding to dry. Once dried, I simply pressed each leaf onto the iced cake skirt. The frosting worked well as glue.

This Homemade Tinkerbell Birthday Cake was a great hit!
