Some friends of ours were having a wine tour birthday party so I wanted to make them the perfect cake to help celebrate their special day. I came up with the idea of a fruit and wine basket cake. The basket is made out of two cakes, carved into a basket shape then covered with a basic two tone basket weave. The wine bottles are made out of rice cereal treats and covered with homemade marshmallow fondant then decorated and painted with food coloring and icing.
The picnic blanket is made of MM fondant as well and painted with food coloring in a classic picnic blanket pattern…. and then, instead of spending lots of time making fake fruit I decided to use real fruit. The ladies I was making it for are somewhat health conscious so this way they could enjoy some nice healthy fruit with their birthday cake. I was thrilled with how the cake turned out and once I added the real fruit, it looked so real.
Everyone at the party was blown away with the cake and no one could believe any part of it was cake. The birthday girls were so surprised and loved their cake. All in all making the already awesome birthday wine tour even better.
