This apple cake is a yellow cake layered and frosted with lemon icing. I used 3, 9″ round cakes and also baked a cake in a bowl for a rounded top. After the layers were frosted, I carved around the cake at an inward angle at the bottom and an outward angle at the top, also inward at the center of the top for the dip where the stem is.
Once it was frosted I rolled yellow fondant and covered the cake smoothing it out as I went. I bought a fake stem of apples at a craft store and cut the apples from it for the stem.
I let the cake sit overnight and once it was settled I glazed it with a mixture of Triplesec and clear corn syrup. It was a big hit!
