Coolest BFG Tire Birthday Cake

I baked this BFG Tire Birthday Cake for my fiance’s oldest son for his 18th birthday. They are both big car guys, and could spend hours (and have) in the tire store. The whole family has the same BF Goodrich tires on their vehicles, so this was an inside family joke.

The cake is four 12” layers of a really good cream cheese brownie type cake with a chocolate cream cheese filling. The frosting is vanilla butter cream – It took almost three full batches to frost this, and 2 of them were black – it takes a lot of black gel coloring to get this color, and it works best if you make it a day ahead so it will darken from gray to black. I carved the top layer down slightly in the middle to make room for the wheel. As they are big on these tires, I even duplicated the tread pattern in detail around the cake (use a toothpick to make the indents around the tread). The lettering on the tire is molded white chocolate.

To make the “mud” I thinned down some butter cream frosting with milk and a little light corn syrup and “splattered” it on using a #10 round decorator tip.

This cake was a huge hit, and everyone walked around with blue mouths for the rest of the day!
