Coolest Duckie Birthday Cake

This Duckie birthday cake was made for my second son’s 1st birthday. He LOVES all his duckie toy’s – so picking a theme was pretty easy! The cake was made using 3 boxes of cake mix. I used yellow cake mix – it always bakes up nice and moist!

I baked a 10″ and 12″ round cake. The 10″ round was the head, and the 12″ the body. I cut a large paper bag into a 12″ circle and made my templates to lay on the cooled cake to cut out the right places. Part of the cutouts were used to make the beak (the rest were for sampling – HAD to make sure the cake was good!). The feet and wing are cookies (simple shortbread) that I made and decorated (with a simple icing make with dried egg whites, powdered sugar, water and milk).

Frosting is homemade butter cream (butter, shortening, powdered sugar, vanilla, vanilla sugar and a little bit of milk). I had my husband cut out the two sides of a large box we had to put the cake on and I had a large piece of fabric I covered it with. I then covered the fabric with saran wrap so the fabric would not get dirty.
