Cool Homemade Goldfish Cake

For my husband’s birthday, I wanted to make a fish cake. My daughter said it should be a goldfish cake (her favorite cracker). We started with a cake baked in a 9x 13″ pan. Once cooled, I leveled it and cut it lengthwise to make two long rectangles.

With frosting in the middle, we stacked them and then carved them into a fish body shape. The excess that was cut off became the top and bottom fins and the fin on the side of the fish. The fish was covered with orange-tinted marshmallow fondant. Scales were cut from small circles and layered on fish body. The fins and head were painted with diluted orange food coloring to emphasize grooves I made in fins and gills with the back of a butter knife.

Finally, an eye was made with a circle of fondant with a chocolate chip pressed in for an eye.
