Coolest Jungle Animals Birthday Cake

I made this Homemade Jungle Animals Birthday Cake for a friend’s 4 year old boy. I got heaps of inspiration from this website and then mixed it with my own ideas.

The cake is a chocolate Madeira cake (made with a whole bar of melted chocolate mixed in!). The icing and animals are made from fondant which I coloured with gel paste colours (the details on the animals have been drawn on using a refillable fine tipped paint brush – that was filled with black food colouring) and the green grassy area is coconut coloured green with liquid food colouring.

The black zebra design on the sides are cut out of thin black fondant and I have stuck them on with a paste made from gum tragacanth powder mixed with water. The grassy area was first outlined with the same paste mix but I added some lime green gel paste to make it like a sticky paint and then sprinkled the coconut on so it would stick.

The leaves on the tree are made from cardboard and I painted these with food colouring. The tree trunk has a couple of skewers to help with stability and all the animals are attached to the cake with toothpicks.

I’d hate to think how long I spent making all the animals etc but I had great fun making this cake and enjoyed every moment. Everyone at the party was very impressed.
