Coolest Lady Bug Flower Cake

We asked my niece what type of cake she wanted for her birthday and of course she had no idea. We did a few searches on the internet and she really liked a lady bug flower cake.

I purchased a Wilton flower cake pan for the flower itself. We used a rectangular cake for the stem and leaves and just used a serrated knife to free hand them out. I decorated the flower first with a thin layer of a light pink butter cream then used a fine tip and piped some darker pink butter cream to make the petals. I used the same small tip to pipe the yellow outline, again with butter cream. I used a grass tip to make the center of the flower again with yellow butter cream. I finished off the flower with a simple striped border around the bottom using the same color frosting as the petals.

I bought some small 5″ pans to make the ladybug. We just baked the cake and then cut the crown off, cut a v shape then cut it in half and turned it around to make the wings. I attached them with a little frosting and then covered the body and wings with a dark red butter cream frosting. The head is carved from the cake and covered with a black icing, as are the spots, from Wilton that is sold in small tubes.

I used the cake decorating kit from Betty Crocker for the whole project. I’ve read a lot of bad reviews about it on the internet. I can say that while it is not a professional decorating kit, it works just fine for making your homemade cake ideas come to life.
