Coolest Lightning McQueen Cake

I made this Lightning McQueen cake for my son’s “friend party” for his 6th birthday. He is a big Cars fan, so of course I could not disappoint.

I made two 9×13 cakes, and carved the car shape out of that. I originally wanted to cover it with marshmallow fondant, but it kept ripping and I couldn’t get it big enough. So I went back on star tipping the red. Prior to adding the details, I sprayed the entire cake to help give it a deeper red color.

I then used colored marshmallow fondant for the mouth, windshield, eyes, letters, headlights, lightning bolts, and tires. On the tires, I used two circle cutters – and I inlayed the rims once the middle had been cut out. I used letter cutters for his name. This was a surefire hit with everyone!! From beginning to end, I would say that it took me about 3 hours.
