Coolest Purple Monkey Cake Idea

I made this Purple Monkey Cake Idea for my daughter’s 1st birthday. I decided on a monkey theme and went to work researching monkey cakes. After an exhaustive search, I never found anything but brown monkeys, which I found to be boring for a one year old girl’s birthday cake.

I originally made my cake from scratch using a recipe from the Wilton website, however, it tasted like cornbread, so I raced to the store and bought a trusty Betty Crocker cake, which tasted great! I made my buttercream icing using butter, powdered sugar, and milk. I like this recipe better than those made with shortening.

I used the Wilton Animal Crackers pan and followed their instructions on how to move the ears and change the facial features into a monkey. I used a star tip for the pink face and purple hair. I used a piping tip for the white, black, and red facial features. Dipping your finger in cornstarch is great for smoothing out the icing on the eyes, nose and mouth. Your fingers won’t stick to the icing and pull it up from the cake.

I need more practice, but I was happy with the results for being one of my first cakes, and it was a hit with my kids and guests. My advice is to be creative and break away from the brown animal cakes!
