Coolest Race Car Track Birthday Cake

After reviewing this site, I decided to make a Race Car Track Birthday Cake for my 6 yr old’s birthday. I prepared a Devil’s Food cake mix and a Classic White cake mix. I then placed spoons full of cake mix in a 10″ pan, alternating between the mixes to create a somewhat checkerboard style. I baked 4- 10″ layers.

I cut about 2″ off of one side of each cake to fit them together (Figure 8 shape). Using Wilton’s white buttercream icing recipe, I added some icing between the cakes to help hold them together on the board and also between the layers. I then sprinkled crushed chocolate stuffed Oreos on the icing filling.

I iced the top white and then using the wide, cake icing tip (Wilton), I placed wide stripes around the sides of the cakes, alternating between white and black (chocolate buttercream icing tinted black). Using that same tip, I piped two wide strips of black icing for the track in the #6 shape. I sprinkled the track with more finely crushed Oreos. I trimmed the cake with a red star border, yellow and red outlines, and added some cars to my track to complete the look.
