Coolest Race Track Birthday Cake

I got the idea for this Race Track Birthday Cake on this website. I baked a 9 X 13 rectangle cake from a box mix and used frosting from the store for decorating. The cars are Hot Wheels.

I printed off a big 2 and cut it out for a template. Then I traced that 2 on a black vinyl $1 placemat from a local dollar store. I actually used the back of the placemat instead of the shiny side up. The back of the placemat was textured and reminded me of asphalt. I cut that out to put on the cake.

I used chocolate frosting, then put on the 2. I had to press it down gently on the corners so it would stick to the frosting. I used some green to make some grass, and some yellow to draw the road lines on. The only hard part was that the 2 stuck to the icing when I pulled it off the cake. This was easily solved, as I used a plastic knife to scrape the icing off the 2 and spread it back on the cake.

This cake was a big hit at my son’s 2nd birthday party. I loved this idea and it was quick to do. I happened to find the little checkered flags in a kit I bought for a few bucks at a local cake shop.
