Coolest Scooby Doo Mystery Machine Cake

I baked two 9×13 Super Moist Devil’s Food cakes and then stacked them when they were cool, using canned chocolate frosting in the middle to stick them together. Then, I trimmed off a small triangle from each corner of the rectangular cake to create the van shape. I didn’t measure the triangles- I just eyeballed them.

I frosted most of the top and the sides of the cake with bright blue homemade buttercream frosting (I used the Wilton recipe). I filled in the middle section with lime green buttercream, using a photo from a Scooby Doo book as a guide for where to make the swirls, etc. I used white buttercream to draw a rectangle for the window and outlined the window with store-bought black gel icing. I used the same gel icing to make a line delineating the doors.

I used orange buttercream and a writing tip to write “The Mystery Machine” on it and to freehand some flowers (used yellow buttercream and a writing tip for the centers of the flowers). Again, I referred to the “Scooby Doo” book for guidance on the font. Finally, I used two Hostess chocolate donuts for the wheels and two Lifesaver Gummy Savers for the hubcaps.

Note: I cut out a small section of the bottom of the cake where the “wheels” would fit in.

My 5-year old was thrilled and the homemade Scooby Doo Mystery Machine cake got lots of compliments.
