This Sea Turtle Cake Idea was a ‘Welcome Home/Birthday’ cake for my sister while she was away for 5 weeks in Australia and Fiji. Through an e-mail she had told me her new favorite animal was the sea turtle. And then I had an idea to make a sea turtle cake for her. This was the first time I used different fondant, cake, and butter cream. So in my eyes it was taking a pretty risk for me. Luckily, it turned out wonderfully and she loved it!
I had done some research on how I would sculpt the cake, which kind would be better for sculpting…etc… My sisters favorite cake is yellow cake, so I had found a homemade recipe that had mixed yellow and pound cake together. And boy was that delicious. For the fondant I used this recipe.
• 1 Tbsp of unflavored gelatin
• 1/4 cup of cold water
• 1 tsp of almond extract
• 1/2 cup of light corn syrup (If a corn syrup is not available, you can substitute it with a sugar syrup made with 1-1/4 cups sugar and 1/3 cup water, boiled together until syrupy)
• 1 Tbsp of glycerin (some recipes say it’s optional, believe me, it’s a must)
• 2 lbs 10X confectioners’ sugar
• 1/2 tsp of white vegetable shortening
previous I had used the marshmallow fondant and which is fine tasting… you just really have to like marshmallows. Ha. But I do believe this one works quite well, but my house is very warm and the fondant didn’t really like that…nor did it like a fan to keep cool. So for that reason it was hard to work with but the next cake I make with that I think it will change a bit.
I had made the cake and fondant the day before so it would have plenty of time to cool down and I could get an early start the next day for it. This particular cake took me about 10 hours to do… but I am also just starting so I am sure once I get the hang of it more than I will be quicker at it. but good luck to you on your cake making.
