Too Real Turtle Birthday Cake

My kids found a baby turtle on the beach two summers in a row.  Their uncle raised each turtle for a year for them and then released it. What better way to celebrate this uncle’s birthday than give him another turtle we found on the beach but in cake form?

I felt badly cutting into his shell, he looked so real, but he was delicious!  Red velvet cake inside, it was the only cake mix I had on hand.  I recommend NOT using red velvet for animal shaped cakes, it ends up looking a little bit like a slaughter house.  I topped with homemade butter cream before layering with store bought fondant.  I painted the white fondant with a vodka and food coloring mix.
