Owl Cake

A friend asked me to make a cake for his mother’s birthday. He told me she loved owls and had 3 grandchildren. So I started looking for ideas and found this site. I loved the cakes and decided to make a large owl (shown) and 3 little ones (one partially shown).

I used the Wilton wonder cake pan (2 stacked on each other for the large owl. I used wooden skewers for stability. and the small Wilton wonder pan for the little ones. I copied the idea of the almond for the feathers in front, I am not sure which was more work, placing those almonds or actually finding whole slices. I went through 3 bags of almonds to find enough in good shape to use.

The rest of the cake is covered in dark chocolate ganache using a large star tip. As I was piping, my ganache was changing temperature and the 3 little ones all have a different look but was very cute. One was very spiky and he was the cutest.

I went to the bulk candy isle at the store and brought home a bunch of things I thought might make beaks and eyes. I tried a few types however the peach rings won out and they made great beaks as well. I used M&Ms for the eyes of the little ones.
