Spiderman Cake

My grandson, Chandler was born on July 4th! Now, that is a special birthday on it’s own, but for his 5th birthday it had to be Spiderman.

The cake itself is a great french vanilla cake recipe, baked according to directions in an 11 x 15 x 2″ sheet pan. I always freeze my cakes, because they are so much easier to decorate, and they are so moist. I used all butter cream icing, and the cake is covered in light blue.

I used a toothpick to “freehand” the spiderweb. I decided to use the color red, instead of black because especially in the heat, the black can bleed. I used a #14 star tip to “draw” the web…with the anchoring “web strands” going all the way to the cake edges.

The top border is a red rope, made with the # 18 star tip, and the border at the base of the cake is a variegated blue rope, also with the #18 tip. To get the variegated look, I filled the bag with half blue, and half white icing. The Spiderman candle sits on a bed of blue “grass”, made with tip # 233.

I topped the cake with a cool Spiderman Transformer, and surrounded it with mylar firecrackers. The theme was completed with chocolate cupcakes iced with “blue

(tip # 233) grass” and Spiderman Cake toppers. These were placed on a tiered cupcake stand. We also had french vanilla cupcakes, iced in red, white and blue with mylar firecracker toppers.

To round out the Independence Day theme, we served star shaped sugar cookies, iced with white chocolate, and my grandson had a ball helping me cover them with red and blue sugar sprinkles!
