Spongebob Cake

This cake was made for my son’s eighth birthday party. The cake was made from Duncan Hines’ pound cake mix. I used two mixes and baked in a 9×13 sheet cake pan. After cooling I trimmed the length to about 9″ x 11″. I torted the cake and put Cherry filling between the layers (I used Smucker’s Cherry Jam) and then covered the cake in yellow butter cream.

The white shirt was made from white butter cream. I used a #12 round tip to pipe the icing on top of the yellow and smoothed it out. The pants were made from canned chocolate icing again piped on with a #12 round tip and smoothed out. Black icing was made from the chocolate icing with Wilton black paste color added and piped onto the cake (#2 for outline #7 for belt). The arms and legs are made from pretzel rods covered in icing and I piped the hands with yellow butter cream.

I used butter cream for all the facial features, the eye pupils are brown M&Ms. For the socks I covered half the pretzel rod in white butter cream and let it crust over then used blue and red food color markers to draw the stripes. Shoes were made from chocolate Zingers cut in half. The tie was cut from a red Fruit Roll-up.

The cake wasn’t that difficult to make and it was a big hit at the party! The cherry filling was especially good with the slightly-lemon taste of the pound cake. My son loved it!
