This 1st birthday cake was done for a one year old who loves flowers and butterflies. I had done this little girl's baby shower cake before she was born, so it was a labor of love.
This is a two tiered 10" and 5" round butter cream chocolate cake with a whipped chocolate ganache filling. I was told to make sure and use orange and purple because the birthday girl has orange hair and loves purple. All the decor is fondant and edible except the two butterfly toppers that I got at Hobby Lobby. They were so shiny and sparkly I couldn't resist them. They were originally on long plastic sticks so I took them off and put them on a couple of Duff's curly wires for cupcakes.
I used one of the newer Wilton molds (I think is called the fern mold) for the greenery and the orange border around the top tier. I made lots of colorful fantasy flowers with different flower cutters and the Tappits cutters for her name as well as a scallop border cutter for the base of the tiers. I used a lot of purple Disco Dust on the #1 topper I made from a mix of fondant and gum paste and I textured the top 'flower' with stamps from Michael's.
Everyone loved it and my biggest thrill was getting a picture of little Emelia covered in chocolate and orange icing digging into her cake with the biggest smile ever.
I made this 1st Birthday Cake Idea for my grandson Mac's first birthday. Its a butter Madeira sponge cake which I split and filled with jam and vanilla buttercream. I crumb coated it with buttercream and covered it with sugar paste which I coloured green with gel food colouring to make a marble effect.
I modelled the little boy sat in the balls from fondant icing and rolled about 80 little coloured balls from fondant also. I also modelled the Thomas tank and other toys around the bottom. I made the figure 1 with gumpaste.
I was happy with the result, and the birthday boy and his two little brothers had fun picking all the tiny balls off the cake and eating them like sweeties!
This 1st Birthday Cake Idea is a yellow sheet cake. For this size cake I used 2 cake mixes. The frosting is buttercream homemade. I used the frosting recipe from Wilton, modified just a little. I like to put more vanilla or butter flavoring in mine. I copied the design from a napkin. I just copied the design free hand and came out with this. I think it turned out great and so did the customer.
I used different sized star tips to fill in the design after I drew it on the cake. I used bright Wilton colors for dying the frosting.
I made this homemade 1st birthday Dora cake for my niece's 1st birthday. I wanted it to look as cartoonish as possible. I did a topsy turvy cake and covered it in fondant and all of the decorations (Dora, Boots, Backpack, Swipper, the gifts, ladder and the alligators) are all made of fondant beforehand and allowed to dry. I cut out mountain shapes and stuck it to the sided and used modeling chocolate for the path that Dora follows. I used pipping gel for the water and buttercream icing to pipe on the clouds.
I used a 9x13" pan and cut it up 3 ways to form a number 1. I then used pink buttercream and smoothed it out over the whole cake. I then used a white shell border on top and white, lilac, and yellow drop flowers along the bottom with some leaves in there too. I placed a tiara on it and the Homemade Baby's 1st Birthday Princess Cake was ready for my baby girls big day.
