This Construction Birthday Cake was for my little boys 2'nd birthday. I baked a sheet cake (1/2 vanilla and 1/2 Chocolate) and cooled it. I used butter cream icing. One side I used tinted green icing. I used the "grass" tip to create grass and bushes. I covered mini ice cream cones for the "trees" (I used a leaf tip).
The "sand" was made with graham crumbs. The dirt was made from chocolate Oreo crumbs. I bought a set of construction machines from Toys R Us. Placed them on the cake. In some machines, eg. the dump truck I placed "dirt"
I used bright orange tinted icing to make safety cones and to do the bottom border. I used Chocolate "rocks" for decorations as well. I found the chocolate rocks at a local bulk store. I also had a tiny Bob the builder toy that we had got from a kinder egg and he fit perfectly.
It was a huge hit!! So easy to do- I would do this cake anytime!
My son is really into tractors and equipment, so after looking at local bakeries and not finding one that was satisfactory, I made my own (with help from my mom, and ideas from this site). I just used pre-made buttercream icing. I made two cakes and froze them, then I cut one in half and put it on the larger one. I also shaved a bit off to make a slop. I died the frosting brown to look like dirt. Then I dug out a hole and used the crumbs to look like more dirt. I also purchased candy rocks, added some greenery, rocks on the side to look like a mountain and some tractors and that was it.
I made this for my 2 yr. olds b-day. He crawls into everything, We nicknamed him "dozer", so I thought a construction site birthday party would be good. I made 2 cakes, one a 13X9 and a 8X8. Yes, I had extra cake mix so i made a small cake just for him. I layed the smaller cake to the edge and cut the corner at an angle for the slope of the road. Then I just iced with brown for the site and green for the grass. I used little construction site trucks and signs that I bought at Wal-mart. I used chocolate covered peanuts for the big rocks. It was very easy and everyone loved it!
I made this cake for my grandson's second birthday. I made two yellow 13x9 cakes and filled them with a chocolate pudding filling. I then iced it with a cool whip frosting and used green non-pareils for the grassy areas and crushed oreos for the dirt. I used a Tonka construction set I bought from Walmart, which included the three vehicles, the cones, signs and trees. I tossed some of the oreos on the side of the cake and also put some in the dump truck. My grandson loved this cake and plays with the trucks still, calling them the "cake trucks!"
I made two sheet cakes out of Chocolate Devil's Food. I made a bundt cake out of Fudge Marble. I assembled the 2 sheet cakes frosting each and then stacking them. I cut the bundt cake into 3rd's making a hill and frosting it. I then crushed chocolate stuffed Oreos adhearing it to the frosted bundt. I then washed and sanitized a few of my son's toys to place on the cake. I made a frost '3' and adheared more cookies to it. Everyone enjoyed it so much!
For my son's first birthday we decided to do a construction theme. We have new home and they were still building home in front of our house throughout his first year. His favorite thing to do was sit at the window and watch the trucks.
I went to Toys R Us and got a kit of construction trucks and a pack of Hot Wheels cars. A from there it was pretty simple.
