Homemade Magnifying Glass Cake

This magnifying glass cake was simply a large round cake, double stacked, and then the handle I carved out of a square pan. The cake is just a white cake (made from scratch). I found the recipe online.

The icing is also a buttercream icing which I found the recipe online for this as well. The buttercream icing needs to be able to crust to smooth it out better. The cake is all buttercream icing, pressed for the smoother look (a better tasting alternative than fondant).

I made this cake for my son's 8th birthday party which was spy themed. Everyone got a kick out of this cake and it was a joy to make! This is only my second custom cake I've made.

frosting without mess...
by: Kerry

The best way to frost without messing up the platter or plate is to place pieces of waxed paper under the edges of the cake before frosting. When frosting is completed, carefully pull out the waxed paper!

frosting

How did you get the cake onto the blue paper without getting frosting all over? Did you frost it while it was on the paper without getting frosting on it? How is this possible?
