This Scooby Doo Mystery Machine 3D van cake was for my son’s 7th birthday who saw a Scooby Doo Mystery Machine cake on this site and being a dad who wanted the easy way went to cake shops to buy such a cake. As I found out the price was huge (I now know why), thought I could do this, but mind you I tried everything to change his mind but was unsuccessful. Also I must add my wife did help especially when I was ready to throw the cake across the room.
I started by doing a lot of research on the web by looking at pictures and other Mystery Machine cakes and come up with this.
I got 2 Betty Crocker chocolate and 1 vanilla cake mixes and baked them in a loaf tin. Once cooled cut the top to make a flat rectangle shape. Then got 1 Betty Crocker vanilla and 1 chocolate frosted icing and put the chocolate between the cakes and stacked on top of each other and then I printed out a A4 size picture of the van (side view) and one of the front view. I also made copies so to use as stencils for edible icing and all flowers and green panels/bumbers and headlights.
I then cut cake to side view and front stencil and then frosted with vanilla all over and smoothed. The next step was to color fondant aqua blue and lime green you will need about 2kg all up. Then rolled and covered blue (fondant sticks to bench, make sure to use lots of icing sugar on bench and keep putting on the bench while rolling and cutting (I found out the hard way a lot of times), then cut out side and back panels with lime green and stuck on with water.
I had the Mystery Machine side signs and windows and windscreen views printed on edible icing and just cut them into the cake. Last I put on bumpers and lights then placed flowers and used half wagon wheels as wheels. If you use a good mirror cake board it gives of effect of full wheels.
All in all for my first cake it was a success.
