Coolest Treasure Chest Birthday Cake Idea

I started this Treasure Chest Birthday Cake Idea with a square cake tin, and made (of course!) a chocolate cake (the recipe was Loni Kuhn’s Devil Food Cake recipe – easy to make, but delicious). This was cut in half laterally, and then chocolate buttercream put in between, to bump up the size of the bottom portion a bit.

The “lid” was made using five round cake tins. Each rounded shape was just less than half of each cake. I used the middle cutouts to create a wedge shape that I put on the back half of the bottom section. I then built up the lid, one round section at a time, using chocolate buttercream to “glue” each round to the wedge shape, and to the round section next to it. The buttercream was a useful filler throughout, since it proved to be virtually impossible to get completely square/straight corners when cutting crumbly cake.

I then covered the whole lot with brown/chocolate-flavoured ready-to-roll icing. Black ready-to-roll was used to fill in the sides of the wedge, to create a dark interior. I used chocolate coins to fill in the front, which as well as creating a overflowing treasure chest impression, also helped to prop up the lid a bit as well.

Finally, the straps were made from yellow ready-to-roll icing, and the studs were chocolate chunks. The key hole was more black ready-to-roll icing.
