Homemade Cowboy Birthday Cake

We made two smaller Gluten Free Pound Cakes and crumb coated them with cream cheese frosting, filling in the gap. Then I applied home made "marshmallow" fondant that was very yummy and also gluten free. Some characters such as the pistols, bandana, rope and stars were simply kneaded with food coloring and molded. This gave a more intense saturation of color. Then some of the detail such as the Cowboys cheeks were painted directly on top of the fondant with food coloring to give more definition.

Finally the words were hand written on the Cowboy Birthday Cake with Gel food coloring.

Homemade Cowboy Birthday Cake

I made this Cowboy Birthday Cake for our state fair competition in August. I got the idea from other pictures on this site and others. I used fondant to cover the cakes, and fondant to sculpt the cowboy and horse. I piped the bandanna with black and white Wilton's recipe icing.

I braided fondant and wrapped it around the cakes to look like rope. All and all I think it turned out pretty good and ended up with a first place ribbon at the fair!

I made this cake for my son's 2nd birthday. He had a western theme. I got the idea from several websites. I was really easy to do. The only hard part was trying to make the cowboy hat, it was the first time I used fondant.I used food coloring spray for the side of the cake.Everyone like the cake and everyone wanted a little boot but those were reserved for the birthday boy.
