Homemade Rubber Ducks And Bath Cake

Homemade Rubber Ducks And Bath Cake

I made this rubber duck and bath cake for my son's first birthday - he absolutely loves rubber ducks! This cake looks fab in the end but is a lot of work and is time consuming.

The yellow ducks are made from fondant icing which I coloured and left to dry for 2 weeks ( to make sure it set well). The taps are also made from fondant icing as was the soap and bubbles which also had to set for a few weeks to ensure they wouldn't droop when on the cake!! These items could have been made from Mexican / modelling paste, but I wanted to save a bit of money and used ordinary fondant icing instead ( a bit easier on the pocket!)

I baked two 8" square cakes, filled with vanilla buttercream and strawberry jam. Butted them together on a large cake drum and made level with icing. These cakes form the bath - so they need to be as identical as possible.

Then I cut a very shallow long rectangle out of the tops of the cakes leaving a symmetrical edge all the way round (this is where the 'water' goes).

Then cover the entire cake with white fondant icing, pushing in the rectangular inset.

Fill the 'bath' with blue coloured royal icing and use spoon to achieve watery effect. Attach taps with cocktail sticks - this means you can turn the taps 'on' and 'off'! (Amused my three year daughter for ages!) Used blue coloured crystals on a silver wire to achieve effect of tap 'running'.

Using edible glue attach bubbles, soap and ducks. Pipe the 'waves' around the edge fix on small ducks around sides.

Made the 'towel' from marbelised fondant icing and piped name etc.

Great fun!

Duckies in a Pond Cake 35

Duckies in a Pond Baby Shower Cake

Duckies in a Pond Baby Shower Cake

My cousin needed a cake for her baby shower. Her sister and I were recruited to make one. Her nursery theme was "little pond" so we thought a pond cake would be fitting.

The cake is a 10x10 pan using two vanilla cake mixes.

The nest and log are tootsie rolls and the bullrushes are tootsie rolls on toothpicks. The rocks are mini marshmallows iced in grey colored buttercream icing. The bubbles on the pond are blue Jolly Rancher Rocks. The dock is chocolate wafer cookies.

Homemade Duck Birthday Cake

I baked a sponge cake for the base of the Duck Birthday Cake and iced it with colored whipping cream.

I used the 3-D duck pan for the duck. Anchored it with skewers to keep it standing and so it wouldn't fall over. Just iced it and left it messy to look like feathers. Iced the bill orange and stuck on googly eyes!

Homemade Duck Birthday Cake

Homemade Duck Birthday Cake

I made this Duck birthday cake in a 13" x 9" pan.

I cut the duck out and placed it on the back of a cookie sheet, covered in tin foil. I frosted the duck in yellow icing and made the feathers out of yellow-tinted coconut. I added chocolate chips for the detail. It was lovely!

Homemade Duckies Birthday Cake

Homemade Duckies Birthday Cake

My daughter loves rubber ducks. So we used the water squirting ducks for our Duckies Birthday Cake.
I used white frosting and added green food coloring and then used blue jello as the pond.

The sand is crumbled graham crackers. I also made her a cupcake for her individual cake, with green frosting and graham crackers.
