Emerald Tree Boa Cake!

My son loves snakes and he asked me to make an emerald tree boa cake for his 5th birthday. I printed off some pictures of the boa as reference. I baked two banana chocolate cakes (my trusty recipe for 3D cakes) using a round shaped tin for the base and a smaller one for 2nd layer.

Ingredients:

  • 4oz butter or margarine
  • 6oz sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 big bananas
  • 8oz self-raising flour

I mashed the bananas. Creamed the butter and sugar together and mixed in the eggs. Then mixed together the two yellow sludges, and the flour. I added about 1 tsp  of cocoa powder to give it a bit more flavor. Scraped the mixture into the tins and baked for about 45-60 minutes.

I used the bigger cake as base then added the smaller cake on top. I then used some frozen pound cake as logs and I cut a diamond shape for the snake head. I then used some swiss roll to complete the top coil.

I covered the cake in lots of green icing. Then I rolled out the fondant and used a net to press against the fondant to make the scales. I then carefully covered the cake with the fondant and cut away the excess.

Then I used the pictures to work on the details. Used yellow M&Ms for eyes, made holes for the nostrils, some white fondant as patterns on the skin and a tongue. I then rolled some brown fondant and covered the logs and the rest of the base. Some edible flowers and ladybirds and voila! My son was very happy with it! We had a reptile party and had a blast!
