I made this Black Widow Birthday Cake for my son’s 2nd birthday. All 3 of my boys at the time were really into learning about black widow spiders, so that’s where the idea came from.
I used a ball cake pan for the body of the spider and for the head, a cupcake. I used Wilton black icing color for the whole cake and the no-taste red for the hourglass. I used black licorice for the legs and pincers.
After I finished making it, though, my oldest son pointed out that it was not correctly made because the hourglass is actually on the underside of a black widow’s abdomen, not the top. I knew that, but I wanted to make sure everyone knew it was a black widow, so that’s why I put it on the top.
